Dedra Hinano Nahinu, CKD
NKBA Aloha Chapter President 2016-2018
The Aloha Chapter Board of Directors have just returned from their trip to Orlando, Florida for the KBIS (Kitchen and Bath Industry Show) and IBS (International Builders Show) as part of Design and Construction Week 2017, held at the Orange County Convention Center. This years' combined shows covered more than 400,000 square feet of exhibitor space with over 600 brands being represented.
Top Name Presenters participated in the Voices From the Industry segments which included Hawaii’s very own Laurent Chauori of Archipelago Hawaii. The officer training was held on the first day where the NKBA Chapter Officers participated in the one-day training event with other fellow officers from around the country. It was a good time for exchanging and discussing new ideas, challenges and ways of advancing our membership, marketplace and certification. That evening we all attended the Magic of Design Awards Banquet held at the Disney World Epcot Center where I was honored to receive a 2nd Place Design Award for Medium Kitchens on behalf of my team at INspiration Interiors in front of my peers and thousands of others that participated. It was truly an honor and dream come true for me and my team to be from Hawaii and compete at a National level among the very best in our industry. My hope is that it will open the doors and encourage many other talented designers in Hawaii to participate at the National Design Competition in the years to come.
The Opening Ceremonies show was kicked off with Keynote Speaker and NFL Hall of Famer and Peyton Manning. He expressed the importance of being on a team and being a leader and pushing through a lot of the hardship and adversities in life that led him and his team to the Super Bowl Championship. He reminded me about the importance of keeping a positive attitude in life and that your “attitude is the key” to achieving great things!
The combination of the West and South Halls along with the Backyard and outdoor areas for both KBIS and IBS called for comfortable walking shoes. It was by far larger than the show in Las Vegas. We boarded a bus on day two to check out The New American Home where cutting edge energy efficiency and stunning contemporary design were incorporated into this 2017 premier show home.
After long days of presentations, show floor coverage with the newest and greatest products to hit the market, it was time to change out of our walking shoes and into our dancing shoes. We celebrated with many other NKBA Members at the Annual BASH Party sponsored by Cosentino and held at Orlando’s newest club hot spot the Mango’s Tropical Café. Gathered here our Aloha Chapter Officers could meet and “talk-story” with NKBA CEO Bill Darcy.
It was a great time to re-fuel our NKBA tanks. On the last night, I attended the IBS Closing Spike Concert with Little Big Town with some of our fellow BIA Officers from Hawaii. There is no doubt that our $134 billion dollar total kitchen and bath market value is alive and well and we will continue to see growth in 2017. We continue to look for opportunities to help our members grow their careers and businesses and will work closely with our related associations this year to create more value through various CEU presentations.
As we embark on the New Year and all that is in store I am reminded why I am involved in this industry and association and it is because I get to be alongside such great people, build great relationships, use great products, do great business and work on great designs!
